13 Actors (6 Women 7 Men) to play all the roles. All actors should be between 20 and 35 years old. All roles require vigorous physical demands and the actors should have movement/dance experience and a commitment to non-naturalistic ensemble work. The director would like all those who audition to prepare a children’s song/folk song to sing a capella at their audition. Most actors will play numerous roles. The director would like to see the actor’s versatility at the auditions by having them read for several contrasting roles. (Not necessarily the roles they would end up playing). Sides will be distributed at the audition. The following roles will be focused on at the audition:

• Wendla Bergman
  14 years old. Naïve, dangerous, curious, deeply confused, flirtatious, erotic. A child-woman.
  
  
• Frau Bergman/Sonnenstich
  Frau Bergman - 30–32 years old. Nervous, loving, remorseful, a coward, willfully ignorant.
  Sonnenstich – 40-50 years old. Faculty head. Closed-minded, bitter, morally superior, self-important, absurdly grotesque. Female who has had to sacrifice everything for her powerful position in the community.
  
  
• Ilse
  14 years old. A child who has turned to prostitution.
  
  
• Martha Bessel
  14 Years old. A child who suffers from severe physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her parents.
  
  
• Thea/Ina
  Thea- 14 years old girl. Friend of Wendla’s.
  Ina- Early 20’s. Wendla’s sister. Young-old mother of three children.
  
  
• Melchior Gabor
  14 years old. A good student. Explosive. Highly intelligent. Honest. Angry and confused. Courageous.
  
  
• Moritz Steifel
  15 years old. Terrified. A struggling student under tremendous pressure from his family and teachers. Desperately trying to please everyone. Naïve. Funny. Lonely.
  
  
• Hans Rilow
  14 Years old. Sexually repressed to the point of obsession.
  
  
• Masked Gentleman
  30 years old. Death/Free will. Sense of humor important. The hope.
  
  
• Robel/Zungenschlag
  Robel- 14 years old. In love with Rilow.
  Zungenschlag- Faculty member. 80 years old. Stutters. Senile.
  
  
• Fliegentod/Georg
  Fliegentod -Faculty member. 80 years old. Senile. Opposes everything. Stubborn. Self-important.
  Georg- 14 year old boy.
